Hey Sal! My stats are showing me that about 57 people came over to take a look at the smoker after reading your comment at the smoker's message board. Thanks for all the traffic. :-)
Anyway - it does have a deflection thingie, it just wasn't in the picture, and the barrel itself is galvanized steel, but the parts that come into contact with the heat aren't, if that makes any difference. This type of smoker seems to be pretty common in Germany, mostly for smoking fish.
